Although the history of Consett is dominated by heavy industry, we still recognise the importance of listening to and engaging with our surrounding community. This is made all the more important by the close proximity of our manufacturing site to homes and schools in Consett.
We make every effort to ensure that our activities cause as little disruption as possible but from time to time we recognise that individuals may wish to raise concerns. Thomas Swan & Co. Ltd. manufactures performance chemicals. Chemicals are used in almost everything you use or see in your life. Tooth paste, ink, paint, glue, hair dyes, varnish, plastic, television screens, washing-up liquid, paper and petrol are a small sample of things that all use or are made up of chemicals.
If you walk through your house or rummage about your kitchen cupboard or bathroom drawer you will probably find items that contain our products; a bottle of disinfectant, a chocolate bar, a bottle of hair dye, or the fan belt in your car for example.
We make chemicals that are used in the manufacture of a wide range of consumer and industrial products. Here are some examples:

Our Ink Resins are used in products such as chocolate bar wrappers or food packaging to stick the ends together without using heat which can damage the food.

Our Hair Dye products are used by companies who make hair dyes. We make the ingredients that give the dye its colour.

Our Biocide products are used in household disinfectants. We make the ingredients that actually kill the bacteria and sell this to companies that then make the final product which you buy in the shops.

Our Rubber Chemicals are used by companies who make tyres, car fan belts or even the rubber conveyor belt on the running machine at your gym! Our products help rubber to stick to fabrics or to lower the thickness of natural rubber while it is being mixed. This means that the company making the tyres doesn’t have to use so much energy.

Powder Coatings are alternatives to paint that are used to coat a wide range of products (like your fridge door). We make additives that help powder coatings dry and increase their resistance to corrosion and scratching.
